In our fast-paced world, finding moments to pause, reflect, and unplug from the busyness of life is essential for our overall well-being. One powerful way to establish a sense of harmony within is to attune to the rhythms of nature through the cycles of the moon.

The moon, with her ever-changing phases, offers us a monthly rhythm to connect with and explore our inner worlds. Tracking the moon’s cycle is one of the best ways to begin understanding your body’s cyclical shifts, your emotional needs and to improve your overall well-being.

This week, we welcome the New Moon in Cancer and we'll be basking in this energy for several days.

The New Moon marks the beginning of the lunar cycle when the moon cannot be seen in the night sky. This phase can symbolize new beginnings, fresh starts, and is a great time to set intentions.

During a New Moon, ritual and reflection are potent as they are most supported by both Cosmic and Earth energies, allowing us to gain deeper insight and magnetize our desires.

In this post, you’ll find several helpful tips to support you in connecting to the energies of the New Moon in Cancer, including:

About the New Moon:

The New Moon is the most mysterious time of the moon’s cycle, bringing darkness to the night sky for 3 days.  In response to the moon's darkness, you may notice that you tend to feel more reflective and internal.

Physically, your energy may be at its lowest and you may feel more tired or sensitive. Emotionally, the New Moon is a time to tune into your heart’s desires and listen to what your inner world is saying.

You may naturally be more introspective during a New Moon, thus, it’s a powerful opportunity to set intentions and actively choose to meet your deepest desires.

About Cancer:

Cancer is a water sign in astrology that is ruled by the moon. Cancer represents the sacred feminine, your ancestry and lineage, and your desire for safety, comfort & security. Cancer is a loving, nurturing, and healing sign that rules emotions. When the moon is in Cancer it is a wonderful time to do things that help build self-esteem.

New Moons in Cancer:

When a New Moon is in Cancer, it is a beautiful time to set intentions to heal family dynamics, current-day issues, or issues stemming from your bloodline’s history.

It's a powerful time to explore your needs for safety and security in your life and relationships and an opportune time to plant seeds of financial abundance. A Cancer New Moon is a beautiful time to embrace the vulnerability that accompanies intimacy.

Observe the Night Sky:

Sometime this week, ideally in the next few days, create a ritual for yourself to intentionally connect with the moon.  Take a moment to go outside at night and look at the moon.  Notice where she is in her cycle.

Is the night sky dark or do you see a bit of light from the sliver of the moon’s crescent?

Honor and acknowledge the moon’s influence over the tides of your inner waters -your womb and blood, and your menstrual cycle if you are a bleeding body.  Where are you in your cycle?

Connect with the astrological sign of Cancer:

As a Water sign, Cancer rules your internal waters- your blood, sweat, tears, and the inner ocean of your emotions and intuition. During the Cancer New Moon, immerse yourself in the element of Water and all it represents.

  • Drink plenty of fluids- clean water, herbal teas, fresh juices

  • Perform a Ritual Bath to cleanse your aura and energetic body or take a a relaxing bath infused with essential oils

  • Spend time near a body of water

  • Create an altar with elements of nature to honor your emotional well-being

  • Embrace your feelings

  • Express gratitude

  • Allow yourself to receive and give love freely

  • Cleanse your space with sacred smokes or Agua de Florida

Journal and Reflect:

A New Moon in Cancer is a wonderful time to explore how to create greater safety, comfort, and security in your life. You may want to engage in passive or active meditation, introspection, goal-setting, or manifestation in the areas of your emotions, intuition, family dynamics + ancestry, or relational intimacy.

A monthly New Moon journaling practice

This is a practice I do every single month without fail. It has truly changed my life and ability to set tangible goals and action steps to support myself and my desires.

The first step to creating a powerful vision is gaining clarity.

To create your unique roadmap to help you get from where you are now to where you want to be, and which action steps you need to take to get there, it’s important to tangibly get in touch with your clear vision, over and over and over again.

Sometimes that might feel big, or overwhelming, or like there’s too much of a gap between where you are now and where you want to be. This practice is designed to help you explore your vision, focusing on just the month ahead, and to create powerful action steps that you’ll do to move the needle forward on your desires.

Grab your journal, create sacred space, get comfortable, and dive in!

1) Pick 1-2 areas of your life you want to improve or focus on.

These can be areas that feel the most out of alignment, challenged, or have simply recently been on your heart & mind more frequently. For example, relationships, career, health, spirituality, money, etc. Set a timer for 10-15 minutes and spend some time journaling on the following questions:

  • Where am I now in this area?

  • Where I would like to be? Write this in the present tense as if it’s already happening, if you feel unsure or get stuck around where you'd like to be, simply write the opposite of what you wrote for "where I am now" and embellish it a little so you can start to get excited about what you'd like to create.

2) Look through your vision.

What stands out? Underline or circle each of the juicy nuggets of desire, feeling states, or outcomes.

3) Now, ask yourself:

  • What actions do I need to take to get to this desire, feeling state, or outcome?

These are often things we know we should be doing but have been resisting or putting off. These actions can be the missing link or foundational structure for our bigger desires. Explore how you might harness your intentions (those things that stood out to you above) into tangible goals & actions that support you to move forward.

  • What are your goals from here?

Choose your goals for the moon cycle ahead (only pick 1-3 goals). Remember, goals have a deadline For example, if a goal you had was to feel joyful and vibrant in your body, your goal might be to register for an online dance class by X date)

  • What action steps can you take to support your goals?

Action steps are the weekly actions you can choose to support your goal (i.e. take 3 dance classes per week on X dates). Try to make these action steps doable and fun so that you actually will do them and feel empowered as you keep your word to yourself (only pick 1-3 action steps).

Moon cycles

Aligning moments of your life with the Earth’s cycles and rhythms can deepen your connection to yourself and the entire universe. By intentionally pausing to connect with the natural world, you create an opportunity to start anew each month. You can set intentions, and goals, and create aligned action steps to support what you wish to manifest from exactly where you are in the moment.

Remember: as the moon waxes and wanes, so do we. The more you connect with the phases of the moon, the more you may understand your inner world and connect more deeply with nature so that you feel greater balance and emotional harmony.
